Increasing Access to Essential Medicines in Developing Countries: Strategies and Barriers


Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:

1. Define what constitutes essential medicines, and list at least four factors that can affect their availability

2. Describe how drugs are commercialized (brought to market); explain ways in which patent laws and trade agreements can affect drug prices

3. Discuss the successes of at least one approach taken to improve worldwide access to existing essential medicines by each of the following sectors: universities, governments, NGO’s and pharmaceutical companies

4. Analyze caveats and shortcomings of actions taken so far; identify future challenges and suggest strategies by which these might be met
